Elder Minutes – Blog Edition, March 2007

Highlights from Recent Elder Meetings

Elder Retreat. On February 23-24 the elders met for an overnight retreat to evaluate both where we are as leaders, and where the church is as a whole with respect to the issues that challenge us. Lyle, fresh from his “mid-winter” experience in Denver, challenged us to ask these three questions:
1. Where are we stuck? What prevents progress?
2. What is an unfulfilled dream?
3. Why are we not “great”
We “brainstormed” together over these questions. As we did so, two things became apparent, our challenges and some positive directions to take.

Nominating Task Force. The Nominating Task Force is now fully engaged in interviewing those who have been nominated to serve as Elders, Deacons and Treasurer. Please pray that godly and gifted persons will sense God’s call to serve the body of Christ at this place.

Staff Searches. Our church is currently involved in two searches.
Senior Lead Pastor. The Search Team has “narrowed the field” of applicants for the Senior Lead pastor position to a very short list. Members of the team are engaged in the final stages of the process before submitting its recommendations to the elders.
Worship Arts Director/Pastor. We are encouraged by the high number of well qualified applicants for this position.
Please continue to pray that God would lead us to the right persons for these positions.

Next Steps Team Update.
· Expansion. There are several options currently “on the table,” including both the ongoing search for land, and expanding on our current site. While it is premature to release details, conversations with the Town of East Greenwich are ongoing.
· Office Space. There continues to be movement in the search of off-site office space, so that current office space can be made available for Children’s Ministry space. One option being currently being investigated by the management Team: the purchase of office space in an office condo complex very near the church.

Charis Counseling Center Affiliate. In order to help provide for the counseling needs in our congregation, we are pursuing an arrangement to become affiliated with the Charis Counseling Center, a Christian organization. This would provide a professionally credentialed Charis staff counselor to work at our location for one day per week. Details will be forthcoming soon.

Faithfully, in Christ

Meditation from Robert

A Place At The Table

Romans 8:24-25
For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.

My Dear Brothers and Sisters, as we approach Easter a word that rises like a banner over us is hope. The Scripture tells us that we are saved by this Hope. Many of us are also motivated by this Hope and yet the Scripture has a juxtaposition of words that may give us some guidance, eagerly and wait.
Eager - Having or showing keen interest, intense desire, or impatient
expectancy
Wait - To remain or rest in expectation

As I talk with people in our congregation, one of the themes of conversation seems to revolve around the eagerness to serve and resting in the expectation of when to serve. Many of us tend to move into action quickly which leads to a loss of eagerness. Our spiritual life can grow greatly when we learn to wait, even when we sense an answer to our prayer. Waiting, this remaining in the place of expectation, for the Spirit has always been difficult, and yet when the Spirit moves us from our eager-waiting place into action, the harvest is beyond our expectations. In the first chapter of the book of Acts Jesus says, "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."
As we prayerfully consider God’s direction for us, some foundational elements are crucial: 1) Prayer, 2) the counsel of others and 3) waiting.

Lent is a time to practice waiting. We eagerly wait for our Hope who does not disappoint us. He will not forget us or keep us out of serving Him. He will send His Holy Spirit and His Spirit will bring movement in our lives and the abundance of fruit we desire.
